Domi nets goal and assist
Maple
Leafs 5, THRASHERS 2
ATLANTA
(AP) -- Tie Domi had a complete night. He scored a goal, earned
his 200th career point and -- of course -- got to throw a
few punches.
"I've
worked hard to establish myself as an all-around player,"
said Domi, who led the Toronto Maple Leafs to a 5-2 victory
Thursday night over the Atlanta Thrashers.
Domi took a big hit from Jeff Cowan early in the game, which
seemed to rile up the Toronto enforcer.
He scored the Maple Leafs' first goal with a fortuitous deflection,
then assisted on the clincher by Alyn McCauley with 10:40
left in the third for point No. 200.
In between, Domi got into a spirited brawl with Atlanta ruffian
Jeff Odgers.
"I
like it when Tie gets a little edge to him," said Toronto
coach Pat Quinn. "As long as he's under control."
The Thrashers lost for only the second time in eight games
(5-2-1) since Bob Hartley took over as coach.
"Whether
you win or lose, you have to stay on an even keel," he
said. "Tonight's game is over. It's never coming back.
"Enjoy
the break and come back with the right focus."
Toronto led 2-1 after the second period and stretched the
margin on Nik Antropov's 13th goal. He stepped out of the
penalty box, broke free on a long pass from Tomas Kaberle
and beat Pasi Nurminen with a backhander at 5:35 of the third.
Hartley called a timeout with his team on a power play, and
the Thrashers quickly capitalized. Slava Kozlov deflected
in a shot from the point by Yannick Tremblay, beating Ed Belfour
with 12:56 remaining.
That's where the comeback ended. With three players behind
the net, Domi passed in front of the net to McCauley standing
all alone. He deked out Nurminen and flipped in a backhander
with 10:40 left.
"Tie
Domi is the best tough-guy player in this league," Hartley
said. "He can score goals, he can make plays and defensively
he is very reliable. Plus, he knows his role."
Mats Sundin added a late goal to finish off the Thrashers.
On Toronto's initial goal, Kaberle flipped a shot from the
boards that caught Domi's right skate and skidded past Nurminen.
Officials reviewed the play before deciding that Domi didn't
intentionally kick the puck into the net, letting his 10th
goal stand at 10:39 of the first period.
"It
was pretty far out," Domi said. "There's no way
you would call it a kick. You can't direct that."
The Thrashers tied the game less than two minutes later. Ilya
Kovalchuk got knocked down along the boards, but he jumped
up and passed to Richard Smehlik standing all alone at the
side of the net.
Shayne Corson put the Leafs back ahead at 3:11 of the second.
Travis Green won a faceoff in the Thrashers zone and Corson
batted a rebound past Nurminen.
Domi spent nearly seven minutes of the second period in the
penalty box, beginning with a roughing penalty on Dan Snyder
after the two tangled at centre ice. Shortly after Domi came
out of the box, he dropped the gloves and exchanged punches
with Odgers.
"Odgers
was doing his job, protecting his teammates," Domi said.
"I respect that.
"
I don't respect the kid who hit me (Snyder)....I didn't even
have the puck."
While breaking up the melee, linesman Derek Amell took an
inadvertent punch from Odgers, leaving the official with a
bloody lip. Amell required stitches and was late coming out
for the third period.
