Domi is the third most penalised player in NHL history, with 3,515 penalty minutes, behind only Dale Hunter (3,565) and Dave Williams (3,966).

The right winger, 36, began his career with Toronto in 1988 and, after stints with the New York Rangers and Winnipeg Jets, returned to the Leafs.

Domi made a name as one of the NHL's most willing fighters but a premium is now placed on speed and skill.

The Leafs decided during the off-season that they would not bring him back, buying out the remaining $1.25m (£650,000) on his contract.

Domi said: "I may not have been the most talented player but I played with every ounce of my commitment and determination to win."

Maple Leafs general manager John Ferguson said: "He stood up for himself and his team mates for over 1,000 games and we wish him nothing but the best."
