Toronto, ON (Sports Network) - Toronto Maple Leafs forward Tie Domi officially announced his retirement on Tuesday after 16 seasons in the NHL.
Domi, who had skated the last 11 seasons with Toronto, had his contract bought out in June after playing in 77 contests, compiling five goals and 11 assists for 16 points with 109 penalty minutes in the 2005-06 campaign.
He reached two NHL plateaus last season, recording his 100th career goal versus Montreal on October 8, and playing in his 1,000th career NHL game at Buffalo on March 3.
"Tie has made many contributions on and off the ice for the Maple Leafs over the last ten years," said Toronto general manager John Ferguson. "He stood up for himself and his teammates for over 1,000 games in this league and we wish him nothing but the best."
Domi, who is known for his physical style of play, scored 104 goals and 141 assists for 245 points with 3,515 penalty minutes in 1,020 games for the New York Rangers, Winnipeg Jets and two separate stints with Toronto.
After getting drafted by the Maple Leafs in the second round -- 27th overall -- in the 1988 NHL Draft, Domi played two games with Toronto in the 1989-1990 season before spending the next two-plus seasons with the Rangers.
In 98 career playoff contests, 86 of which were played with the Maple Leafs, Domi tallied seven goals and 12 assists for 19 points to go along with 238 penalty minutes.
The 36-year-old Domi is third on the all-time penalty minutes list, trailing Dave Williams (3,966) and Dale Hunter (3,565).
"We want to thank Tie for his many years of service to the organization," said Ferguson in June after the buyout. "He became a fan favorite for a reason and we wish him well in the years ahead."
